THURSDAY, July 14 — A coalition of the nation’s largest food makers on Thursday unveiled a plan to set new nutrition standards for foods that can be advertised to children.

The standards include reducing sugar, salt, calories and trans fat and saturated fat.

But, they still fall short of recommendations proposed by the Obama administration in April.

“We have established uniform criteria for participating companies’ child-directed advertising,” Elaine Kolish, vice president and director of the Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative, which includes such companies as ConAgra, General Mills and Kellogg, said during a Thursday morning press conference.

“These new criteria are challenging, but realistic, goals for further improving the products advertised to children,” she said.

According to Kolish, about one-third of products currently advertised to kids don’t meet the new nutrition criteria.

To combat deadly brain cancer, target the stem cells

Researchers have uncovered a new target that could stop the growth of glioblastoma, a deadly form of brain cancer. In the July 8th issue of the journal Cell, a Cell Press publication, a new study identifies an enzyme found in glioma stem cells that allows them to grow and seed tumors. Importantly, normal stem cells, including those in the brain, don’t appear to share that same dependency. “When thinking about therapeutics [targeting cancer stem cells], you have to be careful that you aren’t interfering with normal stem cells,” said Christine Eyler of the Cleveland Clinic. “Glioma stem cells are not derived from normal stem cells but they do share many features with them.

A study has indicated that children who are overweight or obese are more likely to be victimised by bullying when compared to children who are not overweight.

The findings explore the prevalence of overweight and obesity in nine-year-olds and its associations with chronic illness and bullying.

The researchers used a sample of 8,568 nine-year-old children and their families from the first wave of data collection from Growing Up in Ireland the National Longitudinal Study of Children.

Children who were overweight or obese were a lot more likely to be victimised by bullying when compared to children who were not overweight.

Dr Udo Reulbach, Clinical Research Fellow in the Department of Public Health and Primary Care and HRB Centre for Primary Care Research, Trinity College Dublin, said: Previous research has indicated that girls may be more susceptible to overweight and obesity than boys.

Obesity and overweight are of major concern in Irish children with girls being more affected.
