Dayton on boil order due to E. coli in water

DAYTON, Ore. — Residents in the small town of Dayton have been boiling their water for the past three days after E. coli was detected in the water supply.

The city manager said that the E. coli may have come from runoff water that went into the groundwater supply during the recent heavy rain.

Now, the city is waiting for the results of five new water samples with the hope that the boil order will be able to be safely lifted as soon as Tuesday afternoon.

“I’ve gone down to the store and picked up a jug [of water]. I went down there yesterday or the day before and it was all sold out. So, now – they’ve got a little bit left,” resident Gary Goodwrich told KGW.

Local restaurant owners said it’s made operations especially difficult for them.

The owners of Lupitas Restaurant and Black House Café have been using bottled water and soda along with boiling water from the tap.

“It’s a hassle. I mean absolutely, we had to outsource our ice. We have a fountain drink and we basically can’t use that, so we’re just doing bottles of water and pop,” said Jason Aust, with Black House Café. “Any dishes have to be washed in the triple-sink with boiled water.”
