Fast-walking seniors live 3 times longer

If you find yourself lagging behind your walking partners, you might want to try harder to keep up.

A new study of 30,000 seniors showed that brisk walkers live much longer than those who move at a leisurely pace.

Dr. Miles Hassell of Providence St. Vincent Medical Center is applying the research, timing his patients’ walking speed.

“The people who walked quickly lived three times longer than the people who walked slowly,” said Dr. Hassell. The findings were reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association study.

The good news? Even if you’re not walking now briskly now, It’s never to late to start, said Dr. Hassell.
