After Adverse Effects, Roche Ends Trials of Diabetes Drug

Roche has ended late-stage clinical trials that involved giving patients its experimental diabetes treatment taspoglutide.  Data from 52 weeks of trials show that the drug, given once weekly by injection, caused a high rate of adverse reactions and led to a higher-than-expected rate of discontinuations.  Some patients who took the drug reported gastrointestinal intolerability and serious hypersensitivity reactions.  “These discontinuation rates compromise interpretation of the long-term safety data from the T-emerge studies, therefore continuing treatment with the current taspoglutide formulation is not considered to be in the best interest of patients,” Roche said.  Roche has said it is considering a reformulation of the drug.
