Sports-related concussions are common in the United States, but there are many misconceptions about this type of head injury, according to an expert.

While it’s widely believed that everyone with a concussion requires an immediate CT scan or MRI, concussion damage occurs at the microscopic level and cannot be seen on MRI or CT scans of the brain, said Dr. Howard Derman, director of the Methodist Concussion Center in Houston.

A physical exam is required to assess patients for concussion signs and symptoms of concussion, which can appear immediately after the head injury or days later.

Free Diet Doesn’t Lower Diabetes Risk

A gluten-free diet in the first 12 months of life does not lower the risk of later developing type 1 diabetes in children who have a family history of the disease, says a German study. Previous studies had suggested that babies whose diets included gluten in their first months of life might be more likely to develop type 1 than youngsters whose diets did not.

Gluten is a protein in grains that lends elasticity to dough and chewiness to finished baked products. An estimated one percent of the U.S. population has celiac disease, a condition in which an allergy to gluten can damage the intestines. Some researchers have thought that celiac disease might be linked to diabetes.

The German researchers experimented with the diets of 150 babies who had at least one parent or sibling with type 1 diabetes.

US body to review inhalable caffeine, branding as ‘dietary supplement’

AeroShot went on the market late last month in Massachusetts and New York, and it’s also available in France. Consumers put one end of the grey-and-yellow plastic canister in their mouths and breathe in, releasing a fine powder that dissolves almost instantly.

AeroShot inventor, Harvard biomedical engineering professor David Edwards, says the product is safe and doesn’t contain taurine and other common additives used to enhance the caffeine effect in energy drinks.

Tainted sprouts again linked to Jimmy John’s

WASHINGTON AP — Sprouts from the sandwich chain Jimmy John’s have been linked to an outbreak of foodborne illness — again

    The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday that 12 cases of E coli poisoning in five states are linked to clover sprouts eaten at Jimmy John’s restaurants The outbreak comes a year after sprouts from one of the chain’s suppliers were linked to 140 salmonella illnesses Sprouts from the chain were also linked to a 2009 salmonella outbreak in several Midwestern states and were suspected in an E coli outbreak in Colorado in 2008     The CDC reports more than 30 sprout outbreaks in the last 15 years Sprouts need warm and humid conditions to grow, encouraging bacterial growth     Illnesses were reported in Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas and Wisconsin
